BIOSCICAT launches the ‘Natural Springs Programme’,

an urgent strategy to preserve the greatest ecological miracle

of the Mediterranean Iberian ecosystem.

IBERIAN NATURAL SPRINGS AND FOUNTAINS

Natural springs and groundwater-fed springs are our biological “oases”, and the most complex and life-rich expression of Mediterranean ecosystems across the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands. However, they are among the least known, scarcest, most fragile and neglected ecosystems, and their entire biodiversity may be facing a serious threat as a result of climate change and other impacts.

Immerse yourself in them and discover the ecological miracle of the Mediterranean ecosystem

NATURAL SOURCES PROGRAM

The Natural Springs Programme (NSP) of BIOSCICAT has been established in response to the urgent need to protect our most important biodiversity hotspots from the silent process of disappearance and impoverishment they are undergoing.

Its aim is to promote an alliance and launch an Iberian-scale conservation strategy by advancing scientific knowledge, raising awareness among and engaging public administrations and non-governmental organisations, and revealing to society the biological miracle that takes place within spring ecosystems.

1st Iberian Symposium on the Conservation of Spring Ecosystems

Next June, the city of Barcelona will host the First Iberian Symposium on the Conservation of Spring Ecosystems (SICEF19).

The Symposium is convened with the aim of establishing a forum for knowledge exchange and debate that integrates public administrations, managers and all agents involved in its conservation (scientists, technicians, environmental groups, owners), and that at the same time consolidates itself as a platform from which to promote an urgent strategy for the conservation of spring ecosystems from all perspectives and territorial scales.

This first symposium will pay particular attention to the conservation of spring ecosystems in Mediterranean natural spaces, which are home to the most important systems of natural springs and fountains in the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic archipelago.
